WebMux - More than a Load Balancer - Create your own in-house Server Farm and end late night shift

Jim Rowan, CTO of Qcorps Residential, Inc. an Internet transaction processing company, was tired of going into the office at 2:00AM to update his servers. Worse, with 35,000 transactions a day, he could lose valuable e-commerce traffic if he took his server down even for a few minutes. His solution? Harnessing the power of his WebMux load balancer, which was already keeping his web traffic flowing smoothly, to build his own Server Farm.

Jim purchased his first WebMux in 2001 as a low cost, high value load balancer to manage the ever increasing traffic on his e-commerce website. "Reliability and speed is what sold us on WebMux. We have one unit that has been operating for three years, trouble free," Jim says.

WebMux – Work Horse of the Server Farm

As a former jet aviator in the Marines, associated with the Graduate Schools of Aviation including Top Gun, and with a PhD in Computer Science and MBA, Jim is always on the look out for products and processes that will save his firm time and money. While his Internet server environment isn’t simple - he is running a mixed Sun Solaris and Apple OS X web server farm (in fact, he boasts one of the largest deployments of WebObjects outside of Apple) ending his late night Internet server work was simple.

With WebMux, Jim simply makes his standby server active, which moves the incoming traffic off the production server. He then makes updates to the production server. When that’s done, he reverses the steps to send the traffic back to the newly updated production server. With WebMux the system stays up and running while maintenance and updates are done during normal business hours. And, there is no impact on website visitors.

Jim says, "The value for our investment in WebMux far exceeds anything offered by other products." In addition to load balancing and convenient update timing, Jim uses WebMux for health checks on his network to monitor changes in traffic patterns to address possible problems or expansion needs. He has several ways of being notified of system issues, including alerts from WebMux. With WebMux, redundancy is built in. Jim is able to do much more between maintenance services.

Jim has been so pleased with the quality, cost and reliability of WebMux that he recently purchased two WebMux Pros. In addition to WebMux being a much less expensive product, there’s the added peace of mind. With a three-year track record, he knows it will work.
